A nostalgic trip down memory lane

Men and women sat at garden tables with tea and garden parasols watching a group of performers

Our Jolly Wimborne guests were thoroughly entertained by the war time re-enactment performance by Wimborne Community Theatre in the Museum Garden recently.

Afterwards, volunteers Sue and Mary from the Museum Reminiscence Team treated our guests to an interesting and wonderfully engaging trip down memory lane where we all got to handle and smell lots of familiar items from pre and post-WWII. We all had a fantastic time reminiscing and sharing stories while passing around the collection of household products, kitchen equipment and toys.

Who remembers good old carbolic soap? The smell of it could strip the hair from your nostrils! And then there was Izal toilet paper – it was practically waterproof! Someone commented that they used to use it as tracing paper to draw with.

We reminisced about knitted and crocheted swimming costumes which absorbed so much water that the weight could drag you down in the water. never mind the fact that they were very unflattering when wet as they would sag and stretch if the stitching was too big and became extremely revealing.

To round off a wonderful afternoon Micheal read us a beautiful poem by John Betjemen and Sue read us a couple of heartwarming and humorous poems she’d penned. One in particular was in memory of her eccentric Aunt, whom she adored. She later told me that her Aunt approved of her choice of her lovely husband and helped them financially in their early marriage – whereas her parents saw him as ‘beneath her’. We do share such special times together at our Jolly Days.

I’m a web designer and I love creating beautiful, affordable websites that work hard for small businesses. Simply put, a business needs a website to reach more customers. It needs to look good but it also needs to work hard. That’s where I can help, I build cost-effective, good looking websites that are both mobile and google friendly.
